THE AVENGERS – THOR

Today’s Avengers post… THOR!!! Yep, still have a bunch of classic Stan Lee / Jack Kirby issues of Thor I found at a garage sale when I was 8. So awesome! My grandparents bought a box of comics for me when we were on a family trip to Illinois and Michigan in 1984. A bunch of old Superman, World’s Finest, horror comics, and a whole bunch of Journey Into Mystery issues guest-starring Hercules. They were my favorites of the bunch, probably because I was really into all the Norse and Greek mythology at that time.
Just a few days left for the movie, can’t believe I have to wait until Sunday:(

AVENGERS – HAWKEYE

Day 2 of my Avengers countdown. When I was about 7 years old, one of my favorite comic heroes was Hawkeye. Not sure why. I think I just liked his purple costume and the really cool trick arrows he often used. I had a bunch of Avengers issues with him on that team, but never in a major role. And then he split to form the West Coast Avengers. I thought that was really awesome, so I collected the Limited Series and the first few issues of the regular series. But that title became boring really quick, so I moved on to X-Men, Spider-man and the Punisher.

The Avengers – Hulk

I’m counting down the days until The Avengers hits theatre screens in the U.S. It looks like I have to wait until Sunday to go and see it. That’s okay, I’m going to use the next 7 days to post some Avengers inspired sketches I’ve worked on. I’ve been trying a new style that is a bit more relaxed and fluid. Skipping the Illustrator process and going direct to Photoshop.

The first submission is a big old sketch of the Hulk. He is still one of my favorite comic heroes to this day.   The Incredible Hulk television show was one of my favorites when I was four. I loved to watch him smash stuff, and he also scared me to the point of hiding behind sofas and chairs when he was changing.

Here he is, jumping up ready to “Hulk Smash” something…

New Cards

I’m working on a few new posts for some greeting card ideas. Just messing around with some textures and  characters. I have a ton of other sketches and new work that I’ll be posting in the next few days. It’s getting tough to work inside on such nice days. Saving my work time for the hours of 9PM-2AM. So I’m feeling a bit tired at the day job.

Teenage Moon: Craterface

Remember those awkward teenage years? Waking up in the morning and finding that new blemish on your nose right before the big dance? Well, it happens to moons too! Lucky for them, scientists have invented Crater-B-Gone! Now available for vote over at Threadless.com:

The Melting Rainbow

Spring is here and I’m feeling the allergies this week. Just checked the pollen level… it was a 10.2 out of 12. Which explains the worn-out, scratchy-eye, sneezing feeling I’m having the last week. The good news for that is I can stay in and work on a bunch of new ideas. This was the first of about 6 illustrations I’ve been working on. I had 2 different versions of this. Melting ice cream rainbow: one with a curve and the other straight down. Here it is up to vote over at Threadless: http://threadless.com/submission/416633/6_Flavors_of_Fun

These are the 2 versions I worked up during the process:

Rusted Robot

Worked on this piece over the last week. I was trying to find the right design for a shirt. Hoping the giant idea makes the cut. I would love to have a few of these to share if they get printed.

If you have time to throw a vote on this at threadless.com, it would be much appreciated:)

Baby Sea Monster Finds a Toy

This may be the final rework on the Sea Monster. Started work on this a couple of years ago. Finally found time to finalize an idea with this and move on. Even the bravest of sailors fears coming into contact with a playful sea monster. This little guy has the best intentions, but all his toys end up busted and laying at the bottom of the sea.

I also posted this over on Threadless. If you’d like to give this guy a vote please go here. Thanks!

RoboPup vs Homework Round 2

I’ve been busy. Way to busy at work and after work. I have a “to do” list that keeps on growing. One of the things on my list was to submit a design to Threadless. They recently had a backpack design challenge. I thought this may be the perfect spot to use the “RoboPup” illustration. You can check it out and vote here if you would like: RoboPup vs Homework.

AND I was inspired to revisit this illustration after adopting a rescue dog from the Humane Society last weekend. I found this cute little guy on Sunday and I get to bring him home tomorrow! So excited. His name is Rocco and he came from a home with over 100 dogs. Sad story, but he is in really good shape and will be loved by the 3 of us at home. If you are interested in donating to them or reading more on the other dogs, here’s a link to the story at the Humane Society of Minnesota.

Blue Robot – Night Fishing

I’ve been working on this Blue Robot story for the last 2 or 3 years. I have about 15 different panels started. Want to start wrapping them up during the next few months. This one was started 3 years ago. I wanted to wrap this up and then move on to a few of the others.
